Learn how to make Tie Dye Easter eggs with coffee filters. It’s so easy and this technique makes the most colorful Easter eggs!
We’re always looking for fun ways to dye our Easter eggs every year that doesn’t involve the fancy kits from the store. For this frugal Easter egg dying activity we picked up our coffee filters at the dollar store. Plus I like to always have these on hand for crafting with the kids. And a few other supplies like food coloring and rubber bands.
This activity can get a bit messy (but that’s the fun of it, right?), so I would make sure to have gloves and even an apron on hand just incase!
These Tie Dye Easter Eggs turn out so pretty and it’s so fun seeing all of the awesome designs the kids can make!
Tips for Easter Egg Dying
- Disposable pan. This makes cleaning up a breeze! I like to give each child their own pan.
- Gloves. Using gloves will help to prevent hands from being stained.
- Disposable tablecloth. Something else I like to pick up at the dollar store. Using a disposable tablecloth will help protect your craft area and it can be easily rolled up and tossed in the trash.
- You can use whatever combination of colors you like. Just note that the colors will turn out a little different than the colors you put on the egg. This is because the colors mix and end up lighter than they go on. For example, red will look pink.
- You can also use paper towels in place of coffee filters, but I felt the coffee filters were so much easier and worked better for color transfer.
- The coffee filters work for all sizes of eggs. I tried them with the largest eggs I could find and they still fit.
- This works with brown or fresh farm eggs as well. The colors tend to come out darker on the brown eggs, but still very pretty.
- The longer you leave the eggs wrapped, the darker they get. They also get a little darker if you saturate them with a lot of dye.
How To Dye Easter Eggs With Food Coloring and Coffee Filters
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Rest Time: 5 Minutes
Dry Time: 5 Minutes
Supplies Needed:
- Boiled Eggs
- Coffee Filters
- Water Based Food Coloring
- Rubber Bands
- Paper Towels
- Rubber Gloves (optional)
Step 1: Place one egg in the middle of one coffee filter and wrap it tightly, bringing the excess coffee filter to the tip of the egg and securing it with a rubber band.
Step 2: Get your food coloring and start with one color, putting one drop in random spots around the egg. Do this with as many colors as you like, however, I tend to use 4 different colors, the basic red, green, blue, and yellow is what I used for this recipe. Do this until the coffee filter around the egg is mostly filled with food coloring. It spreads, so a little goes a long way.
Step 3: Leave the eggs to sit for 5 minutes,
Step 4: Using rubber gloves if desired, gently unwrap the eggs and pat them dry with a paper towel.
Step 5: Set them back in the egg carton to dry for about 5 minutes. Enjoy!
